Tip of the Iceberg Podcast – Episode 24: Previewing This Year’s Farmworker of the Year Awards

In the latest episode of Tip of the Iceberg, LeAnne Ruzzamenti, Director of Marketing and Communications at the Equitable Food Initiative (EFI), previews the second annual Farmworker of the Year (FWOY) Award. A celebration of the often-overlooked individuals who are essential to the fresh produce industry.

The idea evolved naturally from the collaboration between The Packer and EFI. While the industry often honors retailers, marketers, suppliers, and growers, there was no dedicated recognition for farmworkers, so these two organizations decided to fill that gap.

This award aims to change that narrative. “The people behind our food are highly skilled,” Ruzzamenti explains. “Many are paid by the piece, which means they have to be fast and precise, delivering high-quality product day in and day out.” And while ag tech is making its way into the fields, Ruzzamenti emphasizes the importance of involving workers in those conversations.  This year, over 50 incredible nominations were submitted. “Every nominee is so special,” LeAnne says. “Selecting just one is nearly impossible.” Want to know what stood out to the judges? Listen to the episode here!

In this opportunity, the Farmworker of the Year winner and finalists will receive a cash prize, and each of them will be recognized internally in every organization. These stories will be told throughout the year, highlighting resilience, pride, and a deep passion for bringing healthy, delicious food to consumers.

We want to encourage everyone in the industry to put Farmworker of the Year on their radar. Nominations open around January every year, but now is the perfect time to start reflecting on the individuals who go above and beyond in your operations.

Even small, everyday gestures of recognition matter. Whether it’s a formal nomination or a simple thank you, it’s time to celebrate the hands that feed us all year long.
