EFI and The Packer Recognize and Amplify the Contributions of Farmworkers

WASHINGTON, January 6, 2025 – Equitable Food Initiative, the workforce development and certification organization that partners with growers, farmworkers, retailers and consumer groups, proudly announces the kickoff of the second annual Farmworker of the Year Award. The award honors the vital contributions of farmworkers, whose hard work and dedication form the backbone of our agricultural system.
EFI has once again partnered with The Packer to celebrate these essential workers through this one-of-a-kind recognition. Launched last year as part of EFI's mission to spotlight farmworkers’ contributions, the program invites nominations from across the industry to honor individuals who tirelessly support the success and sustainability of the fresh produce sector.
Farmworkers play an fundamental role in ensuring the fresh produce industry thrives, yet their stories often remain untold. EFI and The Packer launched this award as a platform to shine a spotlight on the resilience, leadership and extraordinary contributions of these unsung heroes.
“Farmworkers are the foundation of our food system, yet their contributions often go
unrecognized” said LeAnne Ruzzamenti, director of marketing and communications at EFI. “This award is part of our broader mission to ensure that the people behind our fruits and vegetables receive the appreciation and recognition they deserve for the knowledge and professional skills they bring to work every day of the year.”
Last year’s inaugural contest included nearly 50 nominations, with finalists from FirstFruits Farms, Mastronardi Produce, Misionero, Stemilt Growers and Wholesum. The 2024 inaugural winner, Maria de Sagrario Iglesias, a farmworker at FirstFruits Farms with over 35 years of experience, set a high bar with her inspiring leadership and dedication.
“Our employees’ nominations and Maria’s recognition as Farmworker of the Year brought immense pride to everyone at FirstFruits Farms,” shared Emily Cox, marketing manager for FirstFruits Farms, reflecting on the program. “The award created a ripple effect of positivity and motivation across our entire team, further inspiring our workforce.”
Nicole Zapata, marketing director at Misionero added, “Having Eduardo Avina named a finalist for the Farmworker of the Year Award uplifted our team. This recognition not only honors the dedication of specific individuals but also highlights the collective efforts of all our farmworkers, reinforcing the vital role they play in the success of our company and the broader agricultural community.”
The 2025 Farmworker of the Year Award aims to build on the success of its first year by expanding its reach and celebrating even more stories of farmworkers’ dedication and leadership. Nominations are now open, and winners will be selected based on their impact on their communities, leadership in their workplace, and commitment to advancing the industry.
