From fields to processing facility, Misionero listens to labor

Equitable Food Initiative (EFI) worker engagement model has provided a positive impact on Misionero’s certified packing facilities in California and Arizona. The producer saw the value in the program and in receiving bilingual skill and leadership training.

“EFI provides a social accountability model rather than sustainability. It helped us build on our strong, existing company culture to ensure the employees have the right channels and access points to be part of the conversation. Their model helps us improve the business from their perspective,” said Nicole Zapata, marketing director at Misionero.

Sustainability and social accountability have been important pillars of growth for Misionero. The EFI certification verifies the good work that farming operations are doing. EFI standards strengthen the way management engages with workers at all levels. The certification sets high standards of transparency, food safety, and pest management. “We are tuned in. We know what we want to accomplish as a business and company culture, and know that our customers want the same,” she added.
