Tip of the Iceberg Podcast – Episode 12: The Best Comments from 11 EFI Episodes

LeAnne Ruzzamenti - PodcastThe Packer and Equitable Food Initiative (EFI) have partnered to bring us a 12-episode series focused on creating a transparent supply chain, a safer food system, and a healthier work environment for farmworkers. As we conclude this series just in time for Farmworkers Awareness Week, LeAnne Ruzzamenti, Marketing Director of EFI, reflects on the lessons learned and the importance of keeping a people-first focus in the produce industry.

In this podcast episode, we hear from representatives of various companies, including Homegrown Organic Farms, Windset Farms, GoodFarms, AgSocio, Pacific Agra Farms, Misionero, Stemilt Growers, and NatureSweet, who share their experiences of how creating a people-first environment and engaging workers at all levels have improved worker retention, reduced mistakes, and enhanced worker well-being in their companies. Play the podcast to listen to the comments from experts in the agriculture industry.

Vernon Peterson from Homegrown emphasizes the importance of trust in building a successful team. “What I learned is people want to be part of making the company they work at better,” he says. “When you cut people loose to perform at their full capacity, it’s amazing what the human spirit can do.”

The representatives from these companies demonstrate that investing in employees and providing them with the skills and support they need to thrive is crucial. Every fruit or vegetable we consume is the result of a team of people working hard to bring it to our tables. By prioritizing their well-being and creating an inclusive and supportive work environment, we can ensure a more sustainable and equitable food system for all.

As we wrap up this series, let us continue to spread the word and advocate for a people-first approach in the produce industry. Let us recognize and appreciate the vital contributions of farmworkers, and work towards creating a food system that honors their hard work and dignity.
