EFI’s diverse group of board members and staff share a passion for transforming the agriculture supply chain. We support the skill development and contributions of farmworkers in growing and harvesting safer fruits and vegetables. We believe that the future of agriculture lies within the collaboration among all members of the food supply chain. We work each day to create solutions for the continuous improvement of the fresh produce industry.

Ernie Farley
Chair

Partner, Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce

Ernie has worked in the berry industry in California and Mexico since earning a degree from UC Davis, and joined A&W over 15 years ago. Ernie brings a vast knowledge of the retail environment as well as extensive networks within the grower-shipper community.

Preston Witt
Vice-Chair

Director, Supplier Code of Conduct Compliance, Costco Wholesale

In his role, Preston oversees supplier engagement with the company’s Code of Conduct, and he has managed rigorous investigations into sourcing practices in the seafood, dairy and fresh produce industries.

Carol Schrader
Treasurer
Independent Consultant An entrepreneur, software executive and marketing strategist, Carol founded or was involved in the start-up of a series of Silicon Valley companies. She is an advisor and angel investor with Astia.org, a global network providing expertise and funding to women-led ventures.
Reyna Lopez

Executive Director of Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PCUN)

Reyna is the proud daughter of immigrants from Mexico and has been a fierce leader and advocate for the Latinx community in Oregon. 

Natalie Camacho Mendoza
Board Member

Board Chair, Farmworker Justice

An attorney and a member of a farmworker/railroad labor family, Natalie has worked with unions as legal counsel and as a farmworker advocate. She serves on the Board of Farmworker Justice and on a variety of local, state, regional and national boards, task forces and commissions.

Michael Conroy
Board Member

Independent Consultant

A published expert on the impact of certifications on corporate supply chains, Michael contributed to the growth of the Forest Stewardship Council and chaired its international board of directors, has served on the boards of several other certification organizations, and was an academic economist at the University of Texas and a grantmaker with the Ford and Rockefeller Brothers Foundations.

Pete Donlon
Board Member

Vice President at Misionero

Pete grew up in Ventura County in a fifth-generation farming family and spent 26 years at Earthbound Farm where his relationship with EFI was formed. He has been on the EFI Standards Committee since 2018 and helped Misionero achieve EFI certifications at two of their packing facilities. 

Eva Greenthal
Board Member

Senior Policy Scientist, Center for Science in the Public Interest

Eva is a passionate public health advocate and systems thinker. At CSPI, she works on issues including food labeling, food safety, biotechnology and more. She holds a dual MS/MPH degree in Food Policy and Applied Nutrition from Tufts University.

Thomas Gremillion
Board Member

Director of Food Policy, Consumer Federation of America

Thomas oversees research, analysis, advocacy and media outreach for the group’s food policy activities, and monitors food safety activities at USDA, FDA and in Congress. An attorney by training, Thomas also has deep experience in environmental law.

Martin Guerena
Board Member

Sustainable Agriculture Specialist, National Center for Appropriate Technology

A certified Pest Control Advisor and trained agronomist, Martin brings years of experience as a grower and an academic to help strengthen EFI’s approach to Integrated Pest Management.

Hana Ivanhoe
Advocacy and Campaign Manager

Ivanhoe is an attorney with over 12 years of policy research and advocacy expertise in business and human rights, corporate responsibility, and sustainable supply chains (with an emphasis on both the food and tech sectors). Ivanhoe is currently a lecturer at Berkeley Law (University of California, Berkeley) where she teaches Anticorruption Compliance among other courses, and a consultant for global nonprofit organizations working in the area of business and human rights.

Erika Navarrete

Vice President of the United Farm Workers (UFW)

Erika, a former farm worker herself, has been representing agricultural workers for 15 years internationally. Her commitment to workers rights and advocacy began in the city of Delano, CA, where she volunteered until she was recruited by UFW. Her vision is to improve farm workers lives and their future. 

Margaret Reeves

Senior Scientist, Pesticide Action Network (North America)

Before joining PAN in 1996, Margaret spent nine years in Central America, teaching and conducting research to improve productivity of low-input ecologically sound agricultural methods. At PANNA she focuses on public policy related to sustainable agriculture and farmworker health and safety.

Fernanda Suarez

Sustainability and Social Impact Director, NatureSweet Tomatoes

Fernanda is passionate about human rights and social change. She is committed to contributing to the development of safe environments where human rights and labor practices are the base of the success and progress of the produce industry. At NatureSweet, she works leading the sustainability and social impact strategy that can generate positive change in the agricultural workers, their families, and communities.

Baldemar Velasquez
Board Member

President and Founder of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC)

Baldemar grew up in a migrant farmworker family, based in Texas and harvesting crops in the Midwest. Under his leadership FLOC has set international precedents in labor history, including being the first union to negotiate multi-party collective bargaining agreements, and the first to represent H2A international guestworkers under a labor agreement.

Lilian Autler
Organizational & Workforce Development Manager

Lilian Autler is a Organizational & Workforce Development Manager of Equitable Food Initiative, a nonprofit certification and skill-building organization that seeks to transform agriculture and improve the lives of farmworkers. As part of the Workforce Development team, Lilian trains labor-management leadership teams in workplace collaboration and problem-solving skills and supports ongoing learning and communication among workers, managers, growers and EFI.

Lilian came to EFI with a wide range of experience bridging language and culture as a community development practitioner, educator, researcher and writer. She worked for a decade in the field of community development finance, leading the creation of new credit unions in “unbanked” communities, and as an adult educator with immigrant workers in union, workplace and community settings. She has lived, worked and traveled throughout Latin America and has a master’s degree in urban planning from UCLA.     Lilian’s facilitation practice is enriched by her background in dance, theater and yoga. She is inspired by hearing people’s stories, facilitating human connection and empathy, and watching individual and group creativity unfold. She lives in Oakland, California with her daughter and partner.

Kevin Boyle
Director, Organizational & Workforce Development

Kevin Boyle is the Director of Organizational & Workforce Development of the Equitable Food Initiative. He is responsible for creating an industry-wide framework of frontline agricultural skills, skill-building and credentialing to provide professional career ladders for agricultural workers and supervisors. He is also responsible for working with growers and their workforce in redesigning production systems to meet the needs of future trends in the industry and maintaining high performing work organizations.

Kevin retired from the telephone industry after 10 years working on issues of workforce education and the design of new workplaces during times of major technological and market driven changes. He also sat on the Board of Directors for Training Partnership, Inc. a non-profit training and retraining corporation jointly owned by US West Communications, Inc., The Communications Workers of America, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Upon retirement he became the principal of Boyle & Associates, Inc. where he consulted with major corporations and Unions in the U.S., Europe, Canada and South America in developing approaches to major changes within their industry supply chain due to market, technical and social drivers impacting their ability to continue to be high performing organizations and quality workplaces. Kevin is the past-Board president for STS Roundtable, Inc. The STS Roundtable is a global learning community made up of business leaders, researchers, trade unionists, academics, managers, and consultants who share the principles and practices of socio-technical systems design/theory, and a common interest in developing more humane and effective organizations and communities. Better Places to Work that Work Better. As the consultant to multiple stakeholders in agriculture and retail, Kevin facilitated the design and collaboration among diverse participants to a systems approach to improving and developing the fresh produce supply chain across the Americas. “Growing up on a family farm still operating after 130 years, is a return to a life that has deep meaning and is my heritage.”

Shaleena Capers
Finance Manager

She/her/hers

Shaleena is the Finance Manager of Equitable Food Initiative. She is passionate about human equality and cultural inclusion. Prior to EFI, Shaleena worked with varying nonprofit organizations providing administrative support, handling contract negotiations and analyzing budgets. 

For over 10 years, she worked in consumer financial education and lending. Shaleena is a passionate educator and has been an advocate for children in the areas of literacy, science and math. She uses dance as a means to connect with youth and teach them about culture and diversity. Shaleena holds a Bachelor of Arts from UMBC and a Master of Business Administration from Strayer University. She lives in Camp Springs, Maryland with her loving family.

David Cea
Senior Workforce Development Specialist

David Cea is the Senior Workforce Development Specialist for Equitable Food Initiative where he trains labor-management leadership teams in workplace collaboration and problem-solving skills. He has been training on EFI farms since 2014 and joined the staff as a full-time facilitator in 2021.

David has a strong passion for developing and improving human life alongside his education in photography and communications. His self-proclaimed passions are the visual arts and human development. Prior to joining EFI, Cea spent more than 10 years coordinating projects for humanitarian aid organizations in the mountains of El Salvador for the most vulnerable populations in areas of popular education and mitigation of natural risks. Additionally, David has coordinated programs for youth at risk, conflict resolution and social reintegration for former gang members in San Salvador. David has lived in the Washington D.C. with his family for the past decade. You can always find him enjoying nature and collaborating with the community to live in unity.

Karla Cook
Certification Manager

Karla Cook is Certification Manager for Equitable Food Initiative where she implements the certification program and works closely with growers and third-party auditors. She also manages the EFI Standards Committee, which provides input and oversight of the EFI Standards.

Karla is an experienced accountable leader with a strong understanding and robust experience in compliance and ethics verifications program for retail, manufacturing and fresh produce supply chain. Karla has worked extensively throughout the latin America region educating, driving and implementing compliance initiatives enabling manufacturers and growers to be more competent to sell their products to the US and European markets. Born in San Francisco but later moved to El Salvador, graduated from high school and got her University Degree in Business Administration from Universidad Jose Simeon Canas. Learning how to live in two cultures helped Karla understand how to make locally relevant, those international business standards and requirements. She enjoys baking, watching movies, road trips and scuba diving. Karla is currently finishing her master’s degree in renewable energy with an emphasis on environmental management systems and currently resides in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Madelyn Edlin
Marketing & Sales Manager

Madelyn is the Marketing & Sales Manager for Equitable Food Initiative. After beginning her career in the environmental nonprofit sector, she later transitioned to agriculture where she learned about EFI. Madelyn joined EFI’s Marketing and Communications team in 2022, where she works on a variety of marketing campaigns as well as sales lead generation.  

Madelyn earned her B.S. in Organizational Communications from University of Portland where she spent much of her time studying food systems and sustainability. A natural traveler and food enthusiast, Madelyn has found the power of storytelling and a good meal in communicating ideas and crossing barriers. When she’s not working, you can find her teaching yoga, or on a mountain trail with her two dogs.

Kenton Harmer
Director, Market-Based Impact

Kenton Harmer is the Director of Market-Based Impact of the Equitable Food Initiative. He directs the multistakeholder process responsible for the ecosystem of standards, policies, and relationships that make-up the EFI certification program and he leads EFI’s program to mitigate forced labor in the agricultural labor supply chain. As Managing Director, Kenton also holds responsibilities for internal management systems that amplify and measure EFI’s impact.

Alice Linsmeier

Alice Linsmeier is a Organizational & Workforce Development Manager at Equitable Food Initiative (EFI), a nonprofit certification and skill-building organization that seeks to transform agriculture and improve the lives of farmworkers. As part of the Workforce Development team, Alice trains labor-management leadership teams in workplace collaboration and problem-solving skills and supports ongoing learning and communication among workers, managers, growers and EFI.

Alice’s greatest teachers were the farmworkers communities she accompanied and worked with for several years in El Salvador. She has continued learning and working alongside farmworker and immigrant communities for the past 30 years in Latin America and the United States. Inspired by popular teachers in the community, she completed a Master’s in International Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco and earned a Bilingual, Crosscultural Language and Academic Multi-subject (BCLAD) teaching credential. She lives in Northern California with her husband and two children.

Gabriela Lopez-Barry
Equitable Charter Implementation Program Manager

Gaby is the Equitable Charter Implementation Program Manager for Equitable Food Initiative where she implements a framework on how to produce fresh produce and flowers with a common baseline for accountability, transparency, and ensuring that people throughout the industry are treated with dignity and respect.

Gabriela came into EFI with a background and commitment to food and social justice, she dedicates her career to promoting good practices and direct relationships between small-scale farmers and the culinary world. Before joining EFI, Gaby worked under the Valrhona Selection umbrella for seven years where she launched and managed a high-quality chocolate brand for professionals in the US market. She was particularly interested in communicating and amplifying the brand’s commitment to long-term partnerships with farmers, and their sustainable agricultural practices. In her free time, Gaby enjoys riding her bike, painting and making things with her hands, and occasionally hitting extensive hiking trails when she has the time.

Adriana Martinez
Director, Certification Programs

 As Director of Certification Programs at EFI, Adriana Martinez oversees all aspects of the certification program, streamlines processes to ensure efficient and satisfying customer experiences, and engages retailers in recognizing EFI certificates and paying a premium on certified products. 

Adriana Martinez is passionate about increasing socio-economic opportunities for marginalized populations. Adriana’s professional career spans the corporate, government, non-profit, and small business sectors, with a focus on this lifelong mission. Prior to joining EFI as Director of Certification Programs, Adriana served as a strategic consultant to diverse clients on various community and economic development initiatives. She was appointed as Director of Outreach for the Governor of California’s Census 2020 ‘Be Counted’ campaign. Adriana earned an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management and a BA in International Relations from Stanford University. She is also a graduate of the CORO Fellows Program in Public Affairs. Adriana is from Boyle Heights and lives in Southern California with her husband and two children.

Alexandra Martinez
Marketing and Sales Associate

Alexandra Martinez is the bilingual Marketing & Sales Associate of Equitable Food Initiative, a nonprofit certification and skill-building organization that seeks to transform agriculture and improve the lives of farmworkers. As part of the Marketing & Sales team, Alexandra supports a variety of marketing and sales outreach efforts with technical, communication and analytical skills. 

Alexandra was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, where she pursued her bachelor’s degree in Finance and International Trade. After graduating, Alexandra traveled to Seattle, WA, to study Digital Marketing at UW. She also pursued a Business for a Better World specialization at Wharton School University which introduced her to a new passion for sustainability. She started to experience the nonprofit world during the pandemic when she volunteered as a business coach for Rocky Mountain Microfinancial Institution and became part of the Marketing Committee for Believe in Me | Foundation for Kids. Both nonprofits are making our society a better place for everyone. Currently, Alexandra moved from Seattle to a small town in the mountains where she can enjoy the outdoors, discover new hikes, go camping, mountain biking, and snowboarding with her husband and her dog.

Candace Mickens
Director, Finance & Operations

As Director of Finance & Operations at equitable Food Initiative, Candace and the Operations Team are responsible for Human Resource Administration, Financial Management, Contracts and Grants Administration, Policies and Procedures, Information Technology and the overall day to day management of Operations. 

She has over 28 years of Business Management experience both in the for-profit and not-for-profit sector and has worked independently as a consultant in a CFO/COO capacity for the past 15 years. She has served over 10 nonprofit organizations as a consultant and six as Board Treasurer. Candace enjoys providing practical solutions and recommendations to enhance the overall functionality of Accounting & Finance Departments. Additionally, she owns and operates a wellness business in which she is a teacher, speaker and host of local wellness events in various holistic health modalities.

Diona Monroe
Data Manager

As Data Manager at EFI, Diona works closely with the Certification & Impact team as Salesforce administrator, analytics manager, and implementation expert. She also works with the Market-Based Impact Team as the ECIP LAB administrator and data & analytics lead. She strives to ensure that EFI’s data and systems are streamlined, accessible, and aide in compelling story telling.

Diona has spent the majority of her career in the commercial real estate market. Most recently, she worked as a Senior Transaction Coordinator for Greysteel’s transactions and advisory services in the Mid-Atlantic. Diona was responsible for working closely with clients and team members to coordinate and manage the production cycle services including timely production and distribution of offering memoranda, market research, investor and on-site property tour registrations, as well as vendor and due diligence coordination. Prior to joining Greysteel, Ms. Monroe worked in various positions for CBRE and CoStar Group, commercial retail companies in Washington, DC. Diona grew up in rural south west Virginia but moved north to earn her biology degree from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She currently lives in vibrant Brookland area of Washington, DC.

Sky Navarro is the Certification Program Associate for Equitable Food Initiative. She provides support to various functions of the Certification Program. Sky assists with audit management and data hygiene on various platforms. 

Sky’s background is in nonprofit development, organization efficiency and data accessibility. She has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Asian American Studies from the University of Maryland. Her passions revolve around supporting women and LGBT+ folk in multicultural communities.

Peter O’Driscoll
Executive Director

Peter O’Driscoll is Executive Director of Equitable Food Initiative (EFI), a non-profit skill-building and certification organization that improves working conditions, pest management and food safety in the fresh produce industry. EFI works with major buyers, suppliers, workers and consumer groups to provide greater assurance regarding supply chain conditions, while generating measurable value for all stakeholders.

Before helping to launch EFI in 2011, Peter served as Executive Director of ActionAid USA, an international development organization that works to address hunger, poverty and human rights around the world. He was Director of the Private Sector in Development Project at the Center of Concern, leading research and advocacy on hunger, sustainability and market access in developing country agriculture. Peter was also Latin America Director for Ashoka, an organization promoting social entrepreneurship, and worked for seven years on refugee resettlement and rural development in El Salvador, ultimately as director of the Jesuit Refugee Service in that country. Peter graduated from Harvard College in 1984, and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He lives outside Washington DC with his wife and two daughters.

Ana (Lulu) Rivera Collazo
Training Manager

Ana (Lulu) Luisa Rivera Collazo is the Training Manager for Equitable Food Initiative where she trains labor-management leadership teams in workplace collaboration and problem-solving skills. She has been training on EFI farms since 2016 and joined the staff as a full-time facilitator in 2019.

Lulu was born in the Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico, where she pursued a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, specializing in outdoor recreation. Raised on a small family farm, she grew attached to nature and agriculture; this experience nurtured a love for the land and its people that motivated her career choice. For many years, she worked as an outdoor educator and facilitator and as community organizer, helping groups develop strong and healthy relationships and striving communities. Most of her work has been helping people develop skills to live a plentiful life, especially in synchronicity with the environment by strengthening communication skills, violence prevention, conflict resolution and team building. She has worked with numerous organizations, developing programs and strategies to educate communities facing climate change to live more sustainably. After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017, she dedicated her spare time to disaster relief and climate resilience in the Caribbean Islands. She is also an artist who loves to paint and sculpt and integrates her experiences and abilities into her trainings. She currently lives in San Diego with her partner and three children.

LeAnne R. Ruzzamenti
Director, Marketing & Communications

She/her/hers

LeAnne R. Ruzzamenti is the Director of Marketing & Communications for Equitable Food Initiative where she oversees strategic branding, communication efforts, lead generation and new client engagement. She works closely with EFI partners to coordinate industry and consumer outreach to generate awareness of EFI’s impact.

LeAnne has spent most of her career helping small businesses and nonprofits leverage their brand and supporters to grow their visibility and improve results. Her most recent positions were with Dairy Council of California and Crocker Art Museum. LeAnne grew up on a family-run apple farm in the Hudson Valley, New York and graduated from American University with a degree in Public Communication and Political Science. She earned her master’s degree in Communications Studies from California State University, Sacramento where her thesis project addressed organizational change. She lives in Southwest Washington with her husband and two children, and when she’s not working, you will find her in the gym, in the kitchen or on a mountain.
